12 Week Course Duration, Monday to Friday, 10:30-17:30
Over the duration of 12 weeks we take you from zero to hero so that you graduate cutting men’s hair at an advanced level. The main topics covered include scissor cuts, skin fading, razor touch ups, facial hair, wet shaving, advanced men’s haircuts and styling, cutthroat wet shaving, beard trimming, consultations, a competition, and a final presentation. Here is a breakdown of the 4 stages of the course:
Stage 1- In the first 3 weeks we teach you the LSB fundamentals of cutting men’s hair with scissors and clippers. You will be introduced to all tools of the trade, how to properly hold each and to use them. You will then learn to section the hair on the head, and you will practice techniques on a mannequin head.
Stage 2- Then in weeks 4 to 6 you will practice these techniques hands-on, on real clients that are provided to your by the academy. With each service you have our pro trainer at your side giving direct feedback and support. We also use trainer demonstrations to give you the opportunity to watch the pro and ask questions throughout the service. At this stage you will be assessed on your haircuts to be completed to standards sufficient to earn your NVQ Level 2 qualification.
Stage 3- From weeks 7 to 9 you next progress to focusing on refining and finishing techniques. Here we teach you methods to put your signature to haircuts through drying, styling, and finishing techniques. You will be assessed on the overall quality of your haircuts that must be passed to an LSB standard, based on a range of 10 factors. At the end of week 9 you participate in a class competition where you will present your best haircut against peers and be rated. The outcomes of these 3 weeks will determine your final grade for your LSB Diploma in Barbering Level 2 certificate.
Stage 4- On weeks 10 to 12 we move onto more advanced skills. During these weeks you will learn cutthroat wet shaving, advanced fading, advanced scissor cuts, and advanced styling. These weeks will push you both technically and creatively. The format here is the same as before, in which we provide you clients to practice on and also use demonstrations to break down advanced cutting methods so that you master the techniques. At the end of week 12 you will prepare a model based on a theme, and you will present him on stage in front of an audience to show your creative flair and technical expertise.
The course covers the following advanced aspects of barbering:
What equipment do I need to bring?
A professional barber equipment kit for £360 (versus retail price for £450) as well as textbooks for £50 will automatically be added to the invoice, both of which will be provided to the learner for their first day of training at the academy. The equipment is hand-selected by the LSB team as the best tools in the market for cutting men’s hair and you will retain the equipment after your course to use at a professional level. The textbooks are essential learning resources that supplement your daily training and help develop your knowledge and understanding much more rapidly.
The kit will include; scissors, tapering and detailer clippers, combs, 2 training heads, a blowdryer, a cutthroat kit, and other items.
Alternatively, students are welcome to supply their own equipment. On course booking you will be provided a full kit list to review.
I have never cut hair, can I take this course?
This course is suitable for both beginners and those with some experience. We will teach you our cutting techniques from scratch and you will practice these on real models under the supervision of our professional barber trainers. If an individual has some prior experience then we can fast-track them onto real haircuts.
Can I leave my equipment at the Academy overnight?
All full-time daytime students are provided a locker to store their belongings in overnight. The locker is large enough to fit all barbering equipment, a backpack, and a coat. We ask part-time evening students to carry their equipment home with them.
I am a foreigner. Can I train with you?
Yes we accept students from across the globe, as far as South America, Asia, Australia, Africa and North America. If you want to become a barber then we are happy to train you. The only requirement is that you speak enough english to understand our teachers.
What are the license requirements to legally work in London as a barber? Do my hours from the U.S. transfer?
Each state has its own process to recognise hours earned overseas. We’ve had a strong track record of Americans training with us and receiving reciprocity for their hours. The process typically entails the learner completing a form for their state board after training with LSB, and LSB provides a letter of reference confirming their hours and modules covered.
It’s very fun! and very good skills, Im Japanese, but it was fun.
Thank you very much!
It was the best experience in the barber business of my life. Thank you all for everything. I learned a lot. You gave me everything I needed to be a better barber.
Really loved my course here, I didn’t know what to expect when I booked but was than happy with the fun informal way of learning. I now have much more confidence and a better knowledge of how to approach hair cuts.
Incredible. I have learnt so much in these 3 weeks. The educators, I couldn’t ask for more. I have 100% become a better barber and my knowledge of hair has certainly improved too. I have enjoyed every minute of it and would definitely recommend anyone who is wanting to become a barber, to go on this course at LSB. Every aspect of haircutting I have been taught I really cant wait to use once I get back working in the shop. Not only have I learnt so much I have had so much fun doing so. I can’t thank the LSB team enough, Before coming here my scissor skills was something I needed to improve and I am finishing the course with being comfortable at using scissors in the correct way and being a better barber at using them. Also coming away being able to give a traditional cut throat shave, I am super happy about and can’t wait to give it a go in the shop and adding it to my service. A big thank you to everyone at London School of Barbering.
