Part time, 43 weeks, Monday to Tuesday, 18:00-21:00

Over the duration of 12 weeks full time (or 43 weeks part time) we take you from zero to hero so that you graduate cutting men’s hair at an advanced level. The main topics covered include scissor cuts, skin fading, razor touch ups, facial hair, wet shaving, advanced men’s haircuts and styling, cutthroat wet shaving, beard trimming, consultations, a fading competition and a final presentation.

Here is a breakdown of the 4 stages of the course:

Stage 1 – We teach you the LSB fundamentals of cutting men’s hair with scissors and clippers. You will be introduced to all tools of the trade, how to properly hold each and to use them. You will then learn to section the hair on the head, and you will practice techniques on a mannequin head.

Stage 2 – You will practice these techniques hands-on, on real clients that are provided to your by the academy. With each service you have our pro trainer at your side giving direct feedback and support. We also use trainer demonstrations to give you the opportunity to watch the pro and ask questions throughout the service. At this stage you will be assessed on your haircuts to be completed to standards sufficient to earn your NVQ Level 2 qualification.

Stage 3 – You next progress to focusing on refining and finishing techniques. Here we teach you methods to put your signature to haircuts through drying, styling, and finishing techniques. You will be assessed on the overall quality of your haircuts that must be passed to an LSB standard, based on a range of 10 factors. You participate in a class competition where you will present your best haircut against peers and be rated. The outcomes of this stage will determine your final grade for your LSB Diploma in Barbering Level 2 certificate.

Stage 4 – We move onto more advanced level 3 skills. You will learn cutthroat wet shaving, advanced fading, advanced scissor cuts, and advanced styling. These weeks will push you both technically and creatively. The format here is the same as before, in which we provide you clients to practice on and also use demonstrations to break down advanced cutting methods so that you master the techniques. At the end of this stage you will prepare a model based on a theme, and you will present him on stage in front of an audience to show your creative flair and technical expertise.

The course covers the following advanced aspects of barbering:

  • Creating a range of popular advanced hair styles: We will push you creatively to think outside the box on how to combine different skills and techniques to produce a unique style that is personal to you as a men’s stylist. You will use advanced clipper, fading and scissor techniques.
  • Reducing speed while still producing a quality haircut: We will teach you to produce a fantastic haircut in an industry standard time through use of time saving techniques and better understanding of how to structure a haircut from start to finish.
  • Execute cutthroat wet shaving & beard trimming services: We will teach you the art of grooming facial hair, whether a full-grown beard or a full-face shave. You will understand all the required steps and abide by the current hygiene standards.
  • Advanced customer service, client care and consultation: We will teach you proper etiquette to make your service more than just a haircut, so that you can maximise your client retention.
  • Product selling tips and strategies: We will give you the product knowledge needed to pick the right product for the right look. We will then show you how to combine product selling & recommendation with your service so that you can maximise the overall revenue from your client.

September 2017

I Progressed on to the level 3 immediately on completion of Level 2.

It took a few days to become accustomed to the different emphasis on course goals.

I very much enjoyed the opportunity to spend perfecting cuts and styles,

as well as developing the skills learnt in Level 2.

On completion of Level 2 I felt almost ready to enter the industry,

but on completion of Level 3 I feel very confident.

Very pleased.

March 2016

Incredible. I have learnt so much in these 3 weeks. The educators, I couldn’t ask for more. I have 100% become a better barber and my knowledge of hair has certainly improved too. I have enjoyed every minute of it and would definitely recommend anyone who is wanting to become a barber, to go on this course at LSB. Every aspect of haircutting I have been taught I really cant wait to use once I get back working in the shop. Not only have I learnt so much I have had so much fun doing so. I can’t thank the LSB team enough, Before coming here my scissor skills was something I needed to improve and I am finishing the course with being comfortable at using scissors in the correct way and being a better barber at using them. Also coming away being able to give a traditional cut throat shave, I am super happy about and can’t wait to give it a go in the shop and adding it to my service. A big thank you to everyone at London School of Barbering.

Can I leave my equipment at the Academy overnight?

All full-time daytime students are provided a locker to store their belongings in overnight. The locker is large enough to fit all barbering equipment, a backpack, and a coat. We ask part-time evening students to carry their equipment home with them.

Can I get an NVQ diploma in barbering even though I'm a foreigner?

Yes you can. The NVQ Diploma can be awarded to people of all nationalities. The qualification is a competency-based award in the UK, and many non-UK countries recognise it.

I am a foreigner. Can I train with you?

Yes we accept students from across the globe, as far as South America, Asia, Australia, Africa and North America. If you want to become a barber then we are happy to train you. The only requirement is that you speak enough english to understand our teachers.

What are the license requirements to legally work in London as a barber? Do my hours from the U.S. transfer?

Each state has its own process to recognise hours earned overseas. We’ve had a strong track record of Americans training with us and receiving reciprocity for their hours. The process typically entails the learner completing a form for their state board after training with LSB, and LSB provides a letter of reference confirming their hours and modules covered.

Is there lots of theory on the course?

We provide top standard learning resources with our step by step videos and visual diagrams. You can review these resources from the comfort of home or on your smartphone.

We also have about 5 hours of learning modules which we will review and discuss at the academy during your training.

The rest of the training at the Academy is 100% practical, during which you will absorb the theory in a hands-on manner. The best way to learn the theory is to apply it while doing a haircut and interacting with the client.

Can I defer my course start date?

Courses are non-cancellable and non-deferrable. All payments made are final and non-refundable.

Are you closed bank holidays?

We are closed on bank holiday Mondays. In these weeks training will occur on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

We are open on bank holiday Fridays and training resumes.

We also are closed for the week between Christmas and New Years. For 9-week & 28-week courses running over this week, we add an extra week to the end of your course to compensate for the missed week.

Can you help with housing?

Certainly. We partner with several housing providers of private or shared rooms in London residences, each renting at around £100-130 per week. This is a great resource for overseas students. Please email us to request the housing list.
