The path from barbering student to shop owner is an exciting one—and at times, a real challenge. At The London School of Barbering, we focus on preparing our students with everything they need to succeed, from mastering cutting techniques to understanding the business side of the barbering world.
Many of our graduates have taken what they’ve learned at LSB and gone on to open their own barber shops, becoming leaders, entrepreneurs and role models in the process. Our courses are designed to give students a solid foundation from day 1 of their barber course, helping them step confidently into the industry—and for some, into business ownership.
Now, let’s dive into some of the inspiring journeys of LSB graduates who turned their passion for barbering into successful businesses.
Success Stories: LSB Graduates Who Built Their Own Barber Shops
Harrison’s Background:
“Before applying for a course at The London School of Barbering, I felt that I wasn’t a very academic person or someone who could see themselves sitting at a desk all day.
I was stuck in life and felt as if he was never going to find the right job, that I would truly enjoy doing daily. During the lockdown period, I did some research and came across LSB. 2 months later, I booked the 12-week course.“
What are the key lessons you learnt during your time at LSB?
“The key lessons that I learnt at LSB were how important the fundamentals are. Everyone will see the cool content and techniques with barbering but not many people will realise the importance of mastering the basics. Aside from all the technical skills I learnt, the second most important lesson that I gained from LSB was learning about customer satisfaction. My time at LSB made me realise that customer satisfaction is all in the barber’s control, within the questions you ask the clients, to how you then execute and deliver.’
Journey to opening their first barber shop:
“I worked in a barbershop for 3 years and then went and opened my own. This was not easy, but it was always my dream. A year down the line and I have expanded my shop and now have one other barber working alongside me.”
Challenges faced and how they overcame them:
The biggest challenges at the start of my barbering journey were not feeling as good as the rest of the barbers in the industry. Mentally, this was frustrating, but it’s all about consistency and putting yourself outside of your comfort zone. As soon as you put yourself out of your comfort zone you will see progression and improvement.
Nothing will change for the better if you shy away and hide from things that you want to improve on. For me, it was searching for a career that suited me best and I am now a proud business owner. Nothing changes if nothing changes.”
Building a Barbering Brand With Dan
Dan’s background:
“I graduated from university in 2005 and spent the next 15 years in the corporate world. While that chapter taught me a lot, I’d always had a passion for barbering.
In early 2020, I decided to make a career change and finally pursue the dream I’d been sitting on for years.”
The leap of faith
“After some in-depth research, I chose to train at the London School of Barbering—and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. From day one, I felt welcomed and supported. The instructors were knowledgeable and genuinely invested in helping us build strong fundamentals. I left there feeling confident and ready to step into the shop environment.
Sadly, the timing wasn’t ideal—I graduated straight into lockdown. But when things reopened in April 2021, I hit the ground running with my first role at a busy shop in Tooting. I loved every minute of it. It gave me a real chance to continue developing my skills and find my rhythm as a working barber. In 2022, my wife and I decided to move to Brighton, and I landed a job at Black L’amour Barbers to continue developing my career”.
Taking ownership
“The team and the vibe at Black L’amour were a great fit for me. Over time I have built up a strong and loyal client base, kept learning, and found my feet in the Brighton barbering community. The opportunity came up to take over the shop—and after a lot of thought, we went for it. Taking ownership of the business has been a huge learning curve but also a fantastic opportunity to continue building my career in barbering”.
From the heart
“Of course, my journey in barbering hasn’t always been smooth, but that is the fun of the challenge, right? I kept my focus on the long game, improving my skills, investing in education, with an attitude of continuous development and learning. I believe that service, standards, and the overall experience are just as important as the haircut itself. You can deliver the cleanest fade in the world, but if you’re not dialled in to professionalism and care, it won’t count for much. For my clients, being there to listen to them, when they might not talk to anyone else that day, is crucial. 40 minutes in the chair without a phone in their hand is bliss for some people.”
Social media
“That same philosophy shapes the way I use social media. For me, it’s not about chasing trends—it’s about showing who we are. I try to reflect the diversity of our clients, the range of hair types and styles we work with and a bit of the shop’s personality too. When people land on our page, I want them to feel welcome and know exactly what kind of space we’ve created.”
Being true to yourself:
“At the end of the day, being true to yourself is everything. That’s what keeps you consistent, helps you grow a real connection with your clients, and builds something that actually lasts.”
Starting Your Barbering Journey
Harrison and Dan’s stories show that it’s never too late to change direction. Whether you’re feeling stuck in a job that doesn’t excite you, or you’ve had a long-standing passion waiting to be explored, barbering can offer more than just a new skill — it can offer a fresh start.
What makes their journeys even more remarkable is that neither had any experience in barbering before they took the leap and enrolled on a course. Like hundreds of others who have made the same move, they started from scratch — no prior training, no industry contacts — just a willingness to learn, grow, and back themselves. Today, both run their own shops and are part of a growing global community of LSB graduates who have built successful careers and businesses in barbering.
These are just two examples out of hundreds of success stories — students who went from beginners to confident professionals, and in many cases, barbershop owners not only across the UK but around the world.
If you’re considering a new career and are searching online for terms like how to become a barber in the UK, UK barbering courses, beginner barber training, or barber career change, know this: it’s possible. With the right mindset, training, and drive, barbering can lead to a fulfilling and independent career — one shaped by your own hands.
