Barber Student Stories – Sean Palmer

Residing between New York and London, acting in some renown theatre and TV shows, Sean was adamant to come and study at our school here at London School of Barbering in London. Training with us marks the start of his journey in pursuing his dream of opening his own men’s lifestyle brand where barbering will be a big part of it.

We caught up with Sean where he reveals a little bit more about himself and his experience at LSB. Read his special interview below….

LSB: What is your name and Instagram tag if you have one?
SP: My name is Sean Palmer and my IG handle is @Seanpalmernyc.

LSB: Where are you from & What LSB course are you taking?
SP: I’m originally from Reno Nevada but I have been based in NYC since 1993. In the last few years I’ve been between London and NY. My mom is a Brit so I have a lot of family and friends here.

LSB: Tell us a little bit about your career journey before you started with LSB?
SP: My first passion is acting. I have been doing it since high school. I’ve been in several shows on Broadway and the West End as well as television, film and commercials. You may be familiar with a few of them including Fosse, Saturday Night Fever, The Little Mermaid, Phantom Of The Opera, Crazy For You, Sex And The City and Greys Anatomy.

LSB:What motivated you to get into barbering, and Why did you choose LSB to learn the trade?
SP: I recently moved from being based in the centre of NYC to upstate NY for a change of pace. But there seems to be a gap in the market for barbers. They mostly cater to younger guys who want razor outlines and extreme fades whilst leaving men who are looking for conservative smart haircuts nowhere to go.

LSB: What aspects of the course are you enjoying at LSB?
SP: I enjoy the social aspect of the course and the school. I also like that we are working close to a variety of talented educators. They all work from the curriculum but share their different points of view about all the ways there are to “skin a cat” as it were.

LSB: Have you got a favourite educator and if so tell us why?
SP: I haven’t been fortunate enough to work with them all but I have enjoyed three of them tremendously: Abby, Jordan and Henry. They are incredibly skilled as well as terrifically generous educators.

LSB: How would you describe training at LSB in three words?
SP: Like Boot Camp.

LSB: Can you describe your best barbering experience?
SP: Whenever anyone smiles back at me through the mirror after a haircut, I feel a tremendous sense of pride. One gent was sent in by his fiancé because he cuts his own hair and she wouldn’t have him doing that before their wedding. He was really appreciative and my haircut is going to be in the photos they look at for years to come.

LSB: Any interesting facts about yourself you would like to share?
SP: I play the saxophone and I’m an avid Lego fan.

LSB: How are you planning on using your barbering qualification and skills when you finish the course?
SP: I want to open a men’s lifestyle brand ultimately. I want Barbering to be a big part of what I offer. But for the immediate future I’m just going to keep on learning, either in a shop a few days a week or by other means.

LSB: What would you say to anyone considering a career in barbering and studying at LSB?
SP: LSB is a fun and cool place to learn. I didn’t do a program in NY because it looks much more like a trade School. We have tons of models available to us and there are many different courses offered so you can come back and improve your skill.

LSB: Anything further to add?
SP: Just that I’m grateful this school exists and for the new pals I’ve made from being here.
